How to Grow Floribunda Roses in Australia

Floribunda roses are easy to grow when you get the foundations right.

  • Pick a sunny position that receives at least six hours of direct light each day. Morning sun is ideal as it helps dry the leaves, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.
  • Prepare the soil well. Roses love rich, well-draining soil. If you have heavy clay, improve it by mixing in gypsum and plenty of organic matter like compost.
  • Plant carefully. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and ensure the graft union (the knob on the stem) sits about 5cm above the final soil level.
  • If you want to grow your rose in a container, select a large pot at least 40-50cm wide and deep with good drainage, and use a premium potting mix.

Potted roses can be planted almost year-round, but if planting in summer, be prepared to water more frequently as the plant establishes itself.

How to Care for Floribunda Roses

Once established, Floribunda roses only need simple care to keep blooming beautifully.

  • Water deeply once or twice a week during the growing season. Aim water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and healthy.
  • Add a 5-7cm layer of organic mulch (like sugar cane or compost) around the base to retain moisture and keep weeds down.
  • Feed with a balanced rose fertiliser in early spring and again in summer to fuel the continuous flower production.
  • Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and shape the plant. This encourages vigorous new growth and more flowers.
  • Deadhead spent flower clusters regularly during the blooming season to encourage the plant to produce new flowers faster.
